Tsitouris' 25 rebounds help Parkwood stay unbeaten

Junior center helps Rebels hold off Country Day

Parkwood High got a monster rebounding effort from Emry Tsitouris, and after nearly blowing a double-digit lead, finished strong in Wednesday's 47-36 home win over Charlotte Country Day.
Parkwood, now 3-0, took an 11-point lead when sophomore guard Lauren Brown opened the second half with a 3-pointer from the left wing. But Country Day (4-2 record) used a trapping pressure defense to get back in the game, and cut the advantage to three more than once.
Junior post Emry Tsitouris responded for Parkwood, though, driving the left side and finishing a well-defended shot at the basket with 3:36 left to push the lead back to five. She followed with a drive down the middle for a finger roll in front of the rim that gave Parkwood a seven-point cushion and essentially put the Bucs away.
A 6-foot junior, Tsitouris pulled down a career-high 25 rebounds and scored 19 points.
"She rebounded like a warrior," Parkwood coach Don Mather said.
"I know I have to rebound and get to every loose ball," Tsitouris said. "I was being aggressive, didn't want the other team to get it. I did what I had to do to get the 'W' and go home."
Tsitouris helped the Rebels build an 18-15 lead with eight points and seven rebounds in the first quarter. Senior guard Maggie Smith contributed five points in the opening quarter and had three assists and a pair of steals by halftime.
Parkwood pushed the advantage to eight points at halftime, 27-19. Tsitouris had a double-double at the break with 11 points and 12 boards.
Mather was pleased to see his team gut out the victory when they didn't have their "A game."
"We didn't play well," Mather said. "We just didn't have the energy we normally have. I don't know what it was but we didn't come quite ready and it's my job to get us ready. I need to have us more prepared to play. Country Day brought a lot of energy and we just never seemed to get into the flow. We were out of sync all night."
Parkwood returns to action tonight at Piedmont.
"This was definitely not one of our best games," Tsitouris said. "We want to come out strong (today) and be ourselves. We just weren't connecting but hopefully that won't be the case (today). Everybody just has to get their mind straight and get out there and be the most aggressive team. We didn't come out with a lot of energy tonight."

Charlotte Country Day guard Matthew Spears scored 18 points and added six rebounds and five assists to lead his team to a four-point win at Parkwood.
Keenan Turpin, a sophomore guard, scored 13 points to lead the Rebels.
Parkwood trailed by double digits much of the way, but cut the lead to 44-41 with 39 seconds left on a Sam Mobley 3-pointer.
Country Day led 28-18 at halftime.
The Bucs are now 1-1 against Southern Carolina Conference schools. They lost a home game to Marvin Ridge (73-61) on Nov. 20.
Parkwood remains winless at 0-3 heading into tonight's game at Piedmont. Country Day plays at High Point Christian School on Friday.
