Cavs whip Latin in front of Roy Williams

Junior guard Shelton Mitchell and senior guard Emmitt Afam combined for 48 points to lead Cuthbertson High’s boys basketball team to a 68-46 home win over Charlotte Latin on Wednesday.

Mitchell finished with 26 points, six rebounds, five steals and three assists in front of University of North Carolina head coach Roy Williams, who attended the game.

Williams attended a Cuthbertson practice in November to watch Mitchell, who has multiple D-I offers.

The Heels haven’t offered, but obviously Williams is interested.

Afam scored 22 points and added four rebounds for CHS.

The Cavaliers (5-0) trailed by five after the first quarter, but outscored Latin 23-12 in the second to take the lead for good.

Mitchell had 14 in the first half, while Afam had nine at the break.

Cornelius Stradford added seven points off the bench for the Cavs. Stradford had two dunks in the fourth quarter.

Rusty Reigel led Latin with 23 points and 11 rebounds.

Cuthbertson begins play in the Rocky River Conference at Union Academy on Friday.

Latin girls 36, CHS 34

Charlotte Latin freshman guard Kiera Dowell made two free throws with 7.6 seconds left to lift the Hawks to a 36-34 road win over Cuthbertson.

Latin improved to 6-0 on the season while the Cavaliers dropped to 2-3.

The Cavs trailed by as many as nine in the second half but got back into the game in the final minutes on back-to-back 3-pointers by sophomore guard Taylor Helms and junior forward Morgan Carlson.

Cuthbertson then tied it at 34 when Helms found Brianna Ingram wide open for a layup with 11.8 seconds left.

After Dowell made her two free throws, Helms’ last-second 3-point attempt missed to end the game.

Helms led Cuthbertson with 17 points, six rebounds and six steals.

Latin got 10 points, 13 rebounds and four steals from senior center Brooke Brown.
