League titles on the line

Cavs can clinch second straight RRC championship
Feb. 14, 2013 @ 05:15 PM

Conference championships will be decided across Union County tonight on the final day of the regular season.
Six doubleheaders are on the schedule, including Monroe at Forest Hills, Piedmont at Cuthbertson, Union Academy at Central Academy, Weddington at Marvin Ridge, Sun Valley at Porter Ridge and Anson County at Parkwood.
Here’s a breakdown of what’s on the line in tonight’s games:

RRC boys
Piedmont travels to Cuthbertson to determine first place in the Rocky River Conference.
The Cavaliers (21-2, 12-1 RRC) currently lead the Panthers (19-3, 11-2) by a game in the league standings, so a win by CHS would clinch a second straight conference title.
If Piedmont upends the Cavs, the Panthers would be co-champions and grab the top seed for next week’s RRC tournament based on tiebreakers.
Cuthbertson won the first meeting 74-61 on Jan. 22. The Cavs’ only loss in the league was a 52-50 decision to Monroe on Feb. 1.
The matchup between archrivals Monroe and Forest Hills has no implications in the RRC standings.
The Redhawks (17-4, 10-3 RRC) have already wrapped up the No. 3 seed for the conference tournament while Forest Hills (13-9, 8-5 RRC) is locked in the No. 4 spot in the conference.

RRC girls
Monroe (20-1, 13-0 RRC) has already clinched the league title outright, but Forest Hills has plenty to play for in tonight’s home matchup with the Redhawks.
The Yellow Jackets (16-6, 10-3 RRC) are currently tied for second place with Cuthbertson (14-9, 10-3 RRC) in the standings. If Forest Hills knocks off Monroe tonight, the Jackets would grab the No. 2 seed for the league tournament due to tiebreakers.
“This game’s important for a lot of reasons,” said Forest Hills coach Eddie Rivers. “It’s Senior Night, plus we’re playing Monroe and that’s always a rivalry in itself. Then the deal with Cuthbertson is really big, too. We’ve got our work cut out for us against a Monroe team that doesn’t like to lose.”
A Cuthbertson win over Piedmont and a Forest Hills loss would give the Cavaliers the No. 2 seed for the RRC tournament and the top seed for the 2A state playoffs.

SCC boys
Marvin Ridge and Sun Valley enter its regular season finales tied atop the SCC standings.
If both teams win tonight they will be co-champs, but Marvin Ridge (13-8, 7-2 SCC) would be the top seed for the conference tournament due to tiebreakers.
The Spartans (14-8, 7-2 SCC) won the regular season title outright with a 10-0 SCC record last season.
Weddington is locked into the No. 3 spot, followed by Anson County, Porter Ridge and Weddington.

SCC girls
Porter Ridge, which has won 13 straight, has already clinched the conference title outright.
Weddington is locked into the No. 2 spot while Parkwood is third in the standings heading into tonight’s home matchup with Anson County.
The Bearcats are in fourth place a game behind the Rebels, but an Anson win would force a tie and a coin flip to determine the No. 3 seed for the SCC tournament.
“We’ve had a couple tough games lately, but if we win (tonight) we can achieve one of the goals we set, which is to be one of the top two 3A seeds in the conference,” said Parkwood coach Don Mather. “It would also give us the potential to have a home playoff game and momentum heading into the conference tournament, so it’s a big deal.”
