FH girls survive Cougars

Rally for first-round win
Feb. 18, 2013 @ 11:37 PM

The third-seeded Forest Hills High girls came from behind to defeat sixth-seeded Central Academy 45-42 in the first round of the Rocky River Conference tournament on Monday at Monroe High.

The Yellow Jackets got off to a slow start and found themselves down 29-21 at halftime.

Just over a minute into the third quarter Amber Isley knocked down a three from the corner to give the Cougars a 32-21 lead.

Forest Hills slowly started chipping away at the deficit for the remainder of the third quarter, and entered the fourth down one at 36-35.

Tonjai Everett gave the Yellow Jackets their first lead since the opening basket of the game on a layup 38 seconds into the fourth.

Cougars center Hunter Manus took the lead back with a basket with 5:58 left.

The Yellow Jackets seized control with a 6-0 run on a free throw and a field goal from Everett and then a three with 2:42 left from Shay Bivens that gave the Jackets a 43-38 lead.

The Cougars cut the lead down to one on Casey Nichols’ basket with 1:21 left in the game.

But Bivens sealed the win by making a layup with four seconds left off a tip pass by Everett.

Rae Moore missed her desperation jumper that could have tied the game.

Everett finished with 18 points, eight rebounds and four steals for the Jackets.

Bivens added 15 as the only other Jacket in double figures.

Hunter Manus recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Alyssa Carbone added nine and Amber Isley finished with eight.

Sam Boling made the Panthers’ 10th three of the day with 3:26 left in the game.

Piedmont slowed the game down as much as possible after entering the fourth with a commanding 57-39 lead.

Jessica Prince and Abbey Mills scored 13 apiece and Prince added five assists, while Mills recorded nine rebounds.

Gentry Grubb led the Comets with 14 points and Jenni Speight recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
