After a frantic fourth quarter, Monroe High's boys basketball team escaped with a thrilling 56-52 win over top-seeded Cuthbertson in the Rocky River Conference tournament championship.
The Redhawks (21-4) led by as many as 11 in the final frame before the Cavaliers (24-3) rallied to tie the game at 52-all on a pair of free throws by senior Justin Austin with 44 seconds left.
But Monroe answered on the other end when senior forward Quayshawn Chambers drove the lane and banked in a runner for the game-winner.
Cuthbertson had one last chance, but Cornelius Stradford's 3-point attempt from the left wing missed and Monroe junior Tre Shun Wynn corralled the rebound with 1.6 seconds remaining.
Wynn knocked down both free throws to seal the victory.
Dikembe White led Monroe with a game-high 22 points. The Redhawks also got 11 points apiece from Chambers and junior guard Brandon Roddy, who was voted Player of the Year in the RRC.
Chambers also added nine rebounds, five steals and four assists.
Cuthbertson, which played the entire tournament without star guard Shelton Mitchell, got 15 points, eight assists and four steals from senior guard Emmitt Afam.
Stradford finished with 12 on four triples while senior forward Isaiah Cureton added 10.
Both teams begin the state playoffs at home on Monday.
The Cavs, who played for the 2A state title a year ago, have lost two of their three games to Monroe this season.
