Monroe High’s boys basketball team jumped on Bessemer City early and cruised to a 75-49 home win in the second round of the 1A state playoffs.
The No. 3 seed Redhawks (23-4) outscored the visiting Yellow Jackets 31-7 in the first quarter.
Junior guard Brandon Roddy, who finished with a game-high 23 points, scored 12 in the opening frame.
Monroe extended its lead to 30 by halftime and Bessemer City (19-8) never got closer.
“We didn’t like the way we finished the game (Monday), so we wanted to come out ready to play,” said Monroe coach Johnny Sowell. “I thought we did a good job on both sides of the floor early on.”
Senior guard Dikembe White added 17 points for the Redhawks, who also got 14 points and 10 rebounds from senior forward Quayshawn Chambers.
Tre Shun Wynn, a senior guard, chipped in with six point and nine assists, including seven in the first quarter.
Senior forward Brad James led the Yellow Jackets with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Michael Meeks, a junior guard, contributed 12 points for Bessemer City.
