Piedmont has five wrestlers win first round at states

The first day of the North Carolina High School Individual State Wrestling tournament saw a little better than of Union County's wrestlers win their first-round matches.
The 4A classification got the day started with five Sun Valley Spartans and two Porter Ridge Pirates entering first round competition.
The Spartans had three wrestlers come out victorious with 132 pound junior Billy Benfield, junior 160 Logan Farlowe and senior 182 Michael Macchiavello keeping their championship hopes alive.
Benfield and Farlowe won by decision (11-4 and 6-4, respectively) while Macchiavello pinned his opponent in 3:19.
For the Pirates, senior 220 Patrick Phillips turned a 4-0 deficit into a victory by pin to advance to the championship quarterfinals.
Spartan wrestlers Thierry Washington (113) and Brian Inouye (138) dropped into the consolation brackets with losses while Pirate 182 Taylor Stringer also will have to wrestle back to place.
In the 2A first round, the Piedmont Panthers had five of eight qualifiers advance out of the first round.
Freshman 120 Brett Underwood scored six unanswered points in the third period to turn a loss into a 10-7 victory in his first state tournament match.
