Playoff run ends for CHS girls
The best season in school history came to an end for Cuthbertson High's girls basketball team on Friday.
East Davidson, the No. 8 seed in the Midwest, pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 50-40 road win over the fourth-seeded Cavaliers in the third round of the 2A state playoffs.
Before this season, Cuthbertson (18-11) had never won a playoff game.
The Cavaliers led 20-17 at the half, but East Davidson (20-9) outscored the home team 33-20 in the second half, including a 20-13 advantage in the fourth quarter.
Morgan Carlson's jumper with 1:08 left pulled the Cavs to within five at 43-38, but East Davidson ended the game on a 7-2 run.
Freshman forward Bayley Plummer led the Golden Eagles with 17 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.
East Davidson also got 11 points and eight rebounds from Jennifer Welborn while teammate Lori Morgan added 10 points.
Carlson, sophomore guard Mara Arnold and sophomore guard Taylor Helms each scored nine to pace Cuthbertson. Carlson, who fouled out with just under a minute to play, also added nine rebounds and four blocks.
East Davidson advances to the 2A state quarterfinals in Greensboro next week.
