Piedmont lefty pitcher Corey Sikes helped his baseball team win 14 playoff games over the last 13 months, and his success on the diamond is a lengthy list. A lesser-know fact about Sikes: He never missed a day of school from kindergarten through his graduation on June 12.

Topsail holds off Panthers for 3A state title

Piedmont tried to rally, scoring three runs on David Nash's bases-loaded double with two outs in the seventh inning, but Topsail held on for a 5-4 win on Saturday. The victory gave the Pirates a series sweep and their first-ever state championship in baseball.

Sun Valley wins state in softball

Sun Valley's softball team won Game 2 of the 3A state championship series 6-4 Saturday morning, completing a sweep of Aycock in their best-of-3 series. The Spartans delivered the second softball state championship in the school's 54-year history, and the first in 17 years.
