Union Academy's girls soccer team set a school record for wins in a season by eliminating top-ranked Gray Stone Day, and now the Cardinals are preparing to play in the 1A state quarterfinals for the third time in four years.

After falling behind 3-0, Marvin Ridge turned it up on offense and pulled out a 7-6 win over Hickory Ridge. The Mavericks will face Cox Mill at home in the second round on Tuesday.

Piedmont High overcame a light-hitting night to defeat Wheatmore 3-1 in the first round of the 2A baseball playoffs. The Panthers are now 23-2 heading into Tuesday's second round.

The Redhawks scored more than twice as many points as any other team at the 1A state track and field meet. Junior Reneazia Collins swept the 200, 400 and 100 hurdles and also anchored the winning 4x200 relay team.

Marvin Ridge didn't have to look far to find its next football coach, promoting outside linebacker and strength coach Dan Bailey to head coach. Bailey is replacing Scott Chadwick, who was relieved of his duties after going 41-20 the last five seasons.

Cuthbertson High named David Johnson the school's next football coach in a festive atmosphere that included a pep band on Wednesday.
