Cougars expecting a big year

Nine starters are back from Central Academy's boys soccer team that went undefeated in the Rocky River Conference last year and reached the third round of the 2A playoffs. CATA opens practice this week in preparation for the Aug. 19 season opener against Piedmont.

Former Monroe High star Jamison Crowder enters his senior season at Duke with 198 career catches. Crowder was one of five players who received at least one vote for preseason player of the year in the league.

Panthers hosting Fan Fest on Friday

The Carolina Panthers will kick off their preseason training camp at Bank of America Stadium with a Fan Fest on Friday starting at 6:30 before heading to Wofford College on Saturday.

Monroe hosting 8-team event in 2015

Monroe, Weddington, Porter Ridge and Cuthbertson will play four teams from outside Union County in a two-day event slated for September of 2015. The Redhawks' administration is hoping to make it an annual event.

Barbour playing for ASU instead of Wake

Former Monroe High receiver Jaylan Barbour, who signed a Letter of Intent with Wake Forest last February, has been released and is taking classes at Appalachian State. Barbour says he has a chance to get immediate playing time for the Mountaineers, who make a return trip to Michigan on Aug. 30.

Jenkins moving to LB for Warriors' loaded 'D'

Weddington High allowed a county-low 9.4 points per game last season, helping the Warriors win a school-record 11 games. Senior Jack Jenkins is one of the six returning starters on Weddington's defense, and he says the unit can be just as good, if not better, in 2014.
