Monroe's football team won handily at Ashe County in the second round, and now the Redhawks are traveling even deeper into the mountains with a 2AA state quarterfinal game at Franklin Friday night. Franklin's only loss over the past two years is in the playoffs against Parkwood in 2013.
Piedmont's wrestling program has been the strongest in Union County for a half-dozen years, and has back most of last year's team that went 28-7 in dual-team competition. The Panthers, who start just one senior, open the season Wednesday against the team that put them out of the postseason last year, and will also take on the five-time defending 4A state champions.
