Warriors loaded on 'D' for 2015

Weddington's football team finished 14-2 and second in the state among 3AA schools, thanks in large part to a defense that allowed 15.4 ppg and had four shutouts. The Warriors' defense is eligible to return nine players with at least 10 starts next season, so expect more of the same.

Panthers edge Tampa Bay, 19-17

Carolina won its second game in a row, defeating Tampa Bay for the second time this season by less than a touchdown. Reserve QB Derek Anerson is now 2-0 as a starter in 2014.

Newton inactive, expected to miss just one game

Panthers QB Cam Newton and running back DeAngelo Williams are inactive for Sunday's home game against Tampa Bay. Newton is reportedly making a good recovery and is expected to miss just one game after his car accident.

Northern holds off WHS, 14-7, for state title

Weddington had a first down at Northern Guilford's 17-yard line with a minute left but couldn't score in the 3AA state title game, allowing the Nighthawks to win their fourth state title in five years. The Warriors completed a pass on fourth-and-10 but it was a yard short of the first down with 11 seconds to play.

WHS facing successful program in state final

Weddington is playing for a state football title for the first time in the school's 15-year history on Saturday night, when the Warriors face Northern Guilford (8:00) in Raleigh. Northern Guilford is only an eighth-year school, but has already won three state championships.
