Piedmont edges Anson, 29-26

Piedmont High won its first football game since the death of head coach Ron Massey and overcame a fourth-quarter deficit to defeat Anson on Monday. Senior QB Cameron Tripp led the way, rushing for two touchdowns and completing two TD passes to senior receiver Ben Radford.

CATA's greedy defense records fourth shutout

Central Academy blanked West Stanly 39-0 on Friday, giving the Cougars four shutouts in eight games this season. CATA has already surpassed last year's win total. See the standings for the Southern Carolina and Rocky River conferences with three weeks to go.

Peppers playing against Panthers as a Packer

Former Carolina Panthers Pro Bowl defensive end Julius Peppers is now a 6-foot-7, 287-pound outside linebacker wearing No. 56 for Green Bay. The 34-year-old Peppers, who has 120 career sacks, faces his old team on Sunday when Carolina visits Lambeau Field.

Mavs stun Spartans for first win of 2014

Marvin Ridge's defense shut down Albert Funderburke and the offense had its way through the air in a 37-20 road win over Sun Valley. The Mavs, who entered the game with an 0-6 record, got a 355-yard passing effort from sophomore Austin Colonna, who completed three TD passes to sophomore Emeka Emezie.

Kendall, Muckelvene lead Cavs to huge win

Cuthbertson is alone in first place in the Southern Carolina Conference after Friday's thrilling 42-38 home win over Weddington. QB Austin Kendall threw for 433 yards and four scores and rushed for 66 yards and two TDs, including the game-winning touchdown with 18 seconds left.

Piedmont picking up pieces after Massey's death

While they mourn, the administrators at Piedmont High have been scrambling to give the players a sense of continuity after head football coach Ron Massey was found unresponsive in his car in the parking lot of Planet Fitness in Monroe Saturday afternoon. Assistant Jamie Belk, described as Massey's "right hand man," has been promoted to interim head coach. The Panthers' home game against Anson has been moved to next Monday.
