Margaret Adams

INDIAN TRAIL — E. Margaret Hubbard Adams, 79, died Saturday (Sept. 12, 2009) at Carolinas Medical Center-Union in Monroe.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lakeview Baptist Church in Unionville, with burial in the church cemetery. The body will lie in repose one hour before the service.

Born Dec. 16, 1929, in Cortland County, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Harlow James and Bessie Mae Keator Hubbard and was married to the late Lloyd Richard Adams. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include two sons, Thomas Adams of Marathon, N.Y., Eric Adams of Indian Trail; three brothers, Emerson Hubbard of Statesville, Earle Hubbard, Frank Hubbard, both of New York; two sisters, Marion Youngs, Isla Jones, both of New York; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Cynthia Griffin

OAKBORO — Cynthia Ann Griffin, 42, died Saturday (Sept. 12, 2009) at Anson Community Hospital in Wadesboro.

Arrangements will be announced by Harris Funeral Home of Monroe.

Ora Helms

MONROE — Ora Lee Hargett Helms, 98, died Sunday (Sept. 13, 2009) at Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at McEwen Funeral Home, with burial in the Lucy Helms Cemetery.

Born April 10, 1911, in Union County, she was a daughter of the late Robert B. and Rachel Ann Newell Hargett and was married to the late Ira Emerson Helms. She was also preceded in death by a son, Ira Wilane Helms.

Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Helms Hinson of Monroe, Winnie Helms Stegall of Wingate; two sons, Kyle E. Helms of Mount Croghan, S.C., Benjamin Darrel Helms of Pageland, S.C.; one brother, Joe Allison Hargett of Monroe; 11 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

J.W. McDow Sr.

MONROE — John Weldon “J.W.” McDow Sr., 88, died Friday (Sept. 11, 2009) at home.

Funeral will be noon Wednesday at Langford Chapel CME Church, with entombment with military honors in the Lakeland Memorial Park mausoleum. The body will lie in repose one hour before the service.

Born in Lancaster County, S.C., he was a son of the late Will and Cora Dunlap McDow and was married to the late Louise Crowder McDow.

Survivors include one daughter, Lugenia Polk of Monroe; two sons, John W. McDown Jr. of Charlotte, Michael McDow of Monro; one brother, Thomas McDow of Washington, D.C.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Public viewing will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Harris Funeral Home.

Joe Simpson

CARROLLTON, Ga. — First Sergeant United States Army (retired) Joe Neal Simpson age 76 of Carrollton, Georgia, passed away September 13, 2009, after an extended illness.

First Sergeant Simpson was born in Monroe, North Carolina, on June 6, 1933, the son of the late Hoyle Jefferson Simpson and Myrtle Love Simpson.

First Sergeant Simpson entered the United States Army July 1950 and served with distinction receiving numerous awards and medals including three Bronze Stars and the Army Commendation Medal. He served three tours of duty in Korea and one tour in Vietnam during war time. First Sergeant Simpson also served tours of duty in Japan, Germany, Fort Polk, Louisiana, and Fort Hood, Texas. Upon retiring from the United States Army, First Sergeant Simpson was employed by Southwire Company, Carrollton Police Department, Trent Tube, and Tanner Medical Center in the Security Department.

First Sergeant Simpson was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and the Love in Action Sunday school class. He was also a member of The American Legion Post 143 and Woodmen of the World Lodge 100.

Survivors include his loving wife of 51 years, Melba Stone Simpson of Carrollton, Ga.; son and daughter-in-law Jeff and Judy Simpson of Carrollton, Ga.; daughter and son-in-law Sheila and Lee Kinkaid of Bremen, Ga., and daughter Jody Windom of Carrollton, Ga., and daughter-in-law Jeanette Henson and her husband Warren; grandchildren Stephanie Oliver and her husband John of Atlanta, Ga., Darlene Shambow and her husband Nicholas of Kingsland, Ga., Aaron Simpson of Kingsland, Ga., Eric Sutalo of Monterey, Calif., Emily Duvall and her husband Jeremy of Dallas, Ga,, Bobby Kinkaid and his wife Hoa, of Perth, Australia, Katie Burgess, of Bremen, Ga., Lisha Windom, Kelli Windom, Daniel Windom, James Denney and his wife Kathy and Jay Denney and his wife Amy, all of Carrollton, Ga., and 17 great-grandchildren; sisters, Peggy Simpson, Helen Price and her husband Joe, Violet Medlin and her husband Walter; and his bothers, Olin Simpson and his wife Linda, Allen Simpson and his wife Marie and Roger Simpson and his wife Sue all of Monroe, North Carolina. First Sergeant Simpson is also survived by his brother-in-law Michael Stone and his wife Sonya and a sister-in-law, Sadie Stone all of Carrollton, Ga. Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his son Joey Simpson in 1997 and his father and mother-in-law, George and Erma Stone and a brother-in-law Richard Wayne Stone.

Funeral services will be September 16, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. from Martin and Hightower Heritage Chapel with Dr. Howard Cobble and Dr. Jimmy Gentry officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home September 15th from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Pallbearers will be military honor guard.

James Whisnant

MONROE — James L. Whisnant, 55, died Saturday (Sept. 12, 2009) at Carolinas Medical Center-Union.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. today at Bethany Lutheran Church in Hickory.

Born Oct. 30, 1953, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, he was a son of Betty Gayle Jones Whisnant of Hickory and the late Alfred N. Whisnant Sr.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include one son, James L. Whisnant Jr. of Archdale; one stepdaughter, Patricia Gilks of Hickory; one brother, Alfred Nelson Whisnant Jr. of Monroe; one sister, Lisa G. Meitin of Augusta, Ga.; and one granddaughter.
