Mistrial for Cavalho
Carvalho was charged with first-degree murder in the Dec. 4, 2002, shooting of James Richard Long.
Jury selection began Sept. 7 and ended in a 7-5 impasse Tuesday.
“Obviously I’m gratified they didn’t convict him,” said defense attorney Robert Trobich. “We’ll have to see what happens next.”
District Attorney John Snyder said his office would almost certainly retry the case, but did not know when.
Long's family members comforted each other outside the courtroom after the trial. One said going through a retrial would be like reliving the funeral.
“If he gets out, he will kill again,” said a relative who asked to not be named. “There was so much incriminating evidence.”
