Welcome Back Bash

MONROE

Western Union Elementary will sponsor a Welcome Back Bash at Monroe Xtreme Play in Monroe Crossing (formerly Monroe Mall) on Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event is open to the public and includes a discounted admission of $5 per child. Parents get in free.

Cartelli named to

SPCC Dean’s List

MONROE

Jana Cartelli of Monroe was named to South Piedmont Community College’s Dean’s List for the summer 2009 session. Students on the Dean’s List were enrolled in an associate degree or diploma program for a minimum of 12 credit hours and earned a grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.

Only courses at or above the 100 level are considered in calculating the eligibility for academic honors, and students are not eligible for consideration unless all coursework for the semester is complete.

Wingate presents

free concerts

WINGATE

The Music Department at Wingate University will present two free concerts open to the public, both in the McGee Theatre in the Batte Fine Arts Center on campus.

Wingate University’s Wind Ensemble will perform “An Evening of Old, Golden Standards” — standard pieces from the concert band repertoire written between 1940 and 1970. The band concert, conducted by Dawn Perry, will be presented Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m.

A University choral concert titled “A Song for All Seasons” will be performed Oct. 8 at 7:30 p.m. Kenney Potter will conduct the choral concert.

Latin Dance Festival

slated at BHESA

MONROE

Benton Heights Elementary School of the Arts, in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, will present “Latin Dance Festival” on Sept. 30 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Students, staff and principal Mike Harvey will perform various dances from Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. Peter Conrad will sing songs from Puerto Rico and other countries.

Two earn DeMayo

scholarships

MONROE

Two Union County Public Schools graduates were recently recognized with $2,500 scholarships each, part of a total of $25,000 in scholarships awarded to area high school seniors by the Charlotte law firm of Michael DeMayo.

India Prather, a Monroe High School graduate now at Wake Forest University, and Jaclyn Wright, a Marvin Ridge High School graduate now attending UNC-Chapel Hill, were chosen based on academic achievements, community service and their response to an essay question asking for ideas that would help prevent teenagers from drinking and driving.

Poplin Elementary night at McDonald’s

INDIAN TRAIL

McDonald’s at 833 Unionville-Indian Trail Road will host McTeacher’s Night from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 29 to support. Poplin Elementary School. Teachers from the school will work behind the counter to take orders and raise money. Other school volunteers will serve as hosts and cheerleaders for the evening to rally guests and mingle among customers.
