K.D. Chambers

PEACHLAND — K.D. Chambers, 88, died Wednesday (Sept. 23, 2009) at Lake Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Arrangements will be announced by Harris Funeral Home of Monroe.

Doris Cornelius

MONROE — Mrs. Doris Jane Hill Cornelius, age 81, passed away Thursday September 24, 2009, in Hospice House #1 of Union County.

She was born December 13, 1927, in Union County, N.C., the daughter of the late Mr. Johnie Thomas Hill and the late Mrs. Kate Privette Hill.

She was educated in the Monroe City Schools and attended Wingate College and Scarrit College in Nashville, Tennessee. She worked for a brief time in the Union County Sheriffs Office. For twenty-eight years, she was employed as director of Christian education at Central United Methodist Church in Monroe and later retired after ten years as director of children and older adult ministries at Providence United Methodist Church in Charlotte, N.C. During these years, she served the United Methodist Church in many district and conference capacities. Mrs. Cornelius was an energetic and compassionate Christian educator who touched many lives as she lived her faith daily.

Mrs. Cornelius is survived by her devoted husband of sixty years: Mr. James C. Cornelius of the home; one daughter, Jane Creech and husband Harlan of Salisbury, N.C.; one brother, Douglas Hill and wife Coleen of Monroe, N.C.; one sister, Betty Ballew of Lugoff, S.C.; one grandson, Joseph W. Creech and wife Nikki of Washington, D.C.; one great-granddaughter, Matalyn Creech of Washington, D.C.

The family will receive friends and relatives for visitation Saturday, September 26, 2009, from 1:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. in Central United Methodist Church Central Hall.

Funeral services for Mrs. Cornelius will then follow at 3:00 p.m. in Central United Methodist Church, conducted by Dr. Matthew Burton and Rev. Britt Hadley, with burial to follow in Lakeland Memorial Park.

The family suggests memorials be made to Central United Methodist Church, 801 South Hayne Street, Monroe, NC 28112.

Grady Deese Jr.

ELIZABETH CITY — Grady Deese Jr., 62, formerly of Marshville, died Saturday (Sept. 19, 2009) at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount.

Funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Nicey Grove Baptist Church in Wingate, with burial in the Piney Grove East Baptist Church cemetery in Wingate. The body will lie in repose one hour before the service.

Born May 19, 1947, in Union County, he was a son of Sarah Harrell Deese of Marshville and the late Grady Deese Sr. He was retired as director of admissions at Elizabeth City State University.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Teresa Deese of Waxhaw; two sons, Victor Deese and Grady Deese, both of Charlotte; one daughter, Adrienne Deese of Charlotte; one brother, David Deese of Dumfries, Va.; four sisters, Mary Morgan of Youngstown, Ohio, Emma Smith of Winston-Salem, Bernice Lindsey of Monroe, Sara Deese of Marshville; and three grandchildren.

Grier Funeral Service of Monroe is in charge of local arrangements.

Christine Gaddy

MONROE — Mrs. Christine Gaddy, age 84 passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2009, in the Rehabilitation and Nursing Center of Monroe.

She was born October 14, 1924, in Chesterfield County, S.C., the daughter of the late Mr. Marshall Lonnie Laney and the late Mrs. Tavie Ellen Strawn Laney. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Mr. Lacy Junior Gaddy, on June 13, 1999.

Mrs. Gaddy is survived by one son, Donald R. Gaddy and wife Sybil of Monroe, N.C.; one daughter, Peggy G. Knight and husband Johnny of Monroe, N.C.; one sister, Mrs. Margie Mahaffey of Fort Mill, S.C.; two brothers, Lonnie Laney and Henry Laney, both of Monroe, N.C.; three grandchildren, Wesley Gaddy and wife Tiffani of Sumter, S.C., Christy Maner and husband David of Monroe, N.C., and Carrie Belk and husband Tim of Monroe, N.C.; five great-grandchildren, Brittani, Caleb, and Cameron Gaddy of Sumter, S.C., Colby and Colin Belk of Monroe, N.C.

The family will receive friends and relatives for visitation Friday September 25, 2009, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at McEwen Funeral Home in Monroe.

Funeral services for Mrs. Gaddy will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 26, 2009, in the Prospect United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Steve Phillippi, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Jesse Hall

BELMONT — Jesse James Hall, 55, died Sept. 18, 2009, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

Funeral will be noon Saturday at Grace and Mercy Cathedral Ministry in Charlotte, with burial in Crown Memorial Park in Pineville. The body will lie in repose for one hour before the service.

He was a son of the late Jessie Lee and Georgianna Polk Hall.

Survivors include his wife, Shelly “Tina” Hall of Belmont; one daughter, Angela Hall Hunter of Charlotte; and three sons, Jesse C. Hall of Charlotte, Jamie Johnson of Lancaster, S.C., and Tony Johnson of Greensboro.

Richmond Funeral Home of Charlotte is in charge.

Mildred Pegg

MONROE — Mildred Blackburn Pegg, 74, died March 11, 2008 in Florida.

Graveside service was Tuesday in Lakeland Memorial Park.

She was born on June 14, 1933.

Michael Thompson

WAXHAW — Michael Nolan Thompson, 50, passed away Tuesday, September 22, 2009. He was born in Mecklenburg County, N.C., on June 14, 1959, son of J.P. Thompson and the late Barbara Ann Amick Thompson.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 26, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. in Mineral Springs United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Thompson is survived by his father, J.P. Thompson of Charlotte; wife, Angie Price Thompson, daughters, Brooke and Jessica Thompson, all of the home; brother, David Thompson and wife Dana and their children, Justin and Kristi of Matthews.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 at Gordon Funeral Service, 1904 Lancaster Ave., Monroe, NC 28112.
