Wingate and Newberry battle to 0-0 tie in SAC action Saturday
The WU Bulldogs are 6-0-3 overall and 0-0-1 in the SAC. Newberry is 7-2-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the SAC. Both teams play home matches Wednesday: Wingate hosts non-league rival St. Andrews Presbyterian College (5 p.m.) and Newberry entertains SAC foe Catawba College (5 p.m.).
Wingate outshot Newberry 9-2 with a 4-0 advantage in shots on goal. The Bulldogs had two good looks in the second overtime frame, as both freshman defender Kelly Moldenhauer (Charlotte, N.C.) and sophomore forward Kelly Adams (Matthews, N.C.) missed opportunities in the final 30 seconds.
Adams, sophomore defender Megan Mastalerz (Elkridge, Md.), senior midfielder Jordan Mayer (Williamsburg, Va.) and sophomore midfielder Kelsey McCormick (Hockessin, Del.) had one shot on goal each for the hosts Bulldogs. Wingate entered its league opener with 25 goals in eight matches. Newberry had 18 tallies in nine contests prior to Saturday’s deadlock.
Both goalkeepers played wire-to-wire Saturday. Wingate freshman goalkeeper Miriam Boucher (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) did not face a shot on goal. Newberry sophomore netminder Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) collected four saves for the visitors.
