PAID OBITUARY
Ann Holloway
MONROE — Ann Franklin Holloway passed away on Sunday, September 27, 2009. In her journey through life, she demanded little for herself but gave unceasingly and joyfully to others.
Mom was born on August 25, 1917 in Gwinnett County, Georgia, to the late Emory and Lucy Franklin. She was the third eldest of ten children. She grew up on a farm and worked at all kinds of chores, including milking cows, chopping cotton, and growing and selling vegetables in Atlanta during the Depression. She was a graduate of Grady Hospital School of Nursing in Atlanta and came to Monroe in 1938 to work at the Ellen Fitzgerald Hospital. She met and married Marion L. Holloway Sr. on December 31, 1940.
Mom worked as a registered nurse in various hospitals across the country during WWII as she followed her husband Marion who was in the Army Air Force. Later she worked at Union Regional Hospital and served as the supervisor of the Smith Building for 15 years. Her professional skill was recognized by the doctors with whom she worked and many families have told us how comforted they were by her skill and care. She also acted as an advisor for family and many friends, willingly sharing her nursing skills. After retirement, she worked at Holloway’s Music Center where she was responsible for ordering all the sheet music and made many friends as she greeted customers with her beautiful smile.
Mom was a talented cook, gardener, and flower arranger. Many people across Union County benefitted from her willingness to share those talents. She was a faithful member of Central United Methodist Church and she and our father had a special spot in the sanctuary every Sunday for more than 60 years.
She was predeceased by her parents and by three sisters Bea Turner, Lucille Ragan, and Lillian Haney, three brothers Emory Franklin Jr., Robert Franklin and Everett Franklin, and her son-in-law Tony Szenasy.
She is survived by her beloved husband of more than 68 years, Marion Holloway Sr. and her three children, daughter Wanda Szenasy of Greensboro, two sons Marion Holloway and his wife Mary Helen and Franklin Holloway, all of Monroe. She really loved her three special granddaughters, Laura Walters and her husband Chris of Greensboro, Kim Payne and her husband David of Windsor, Conn. and Jennifer Holloway of Santa Monica, Calif. And she adored her three great-grandchildren, Stephen Walters, Brian Walters and Emma Payne. Other survivors include one sister Caroline Franklin and two brothers Newton Franklin and William Franklin, and over 25 nieces and nephews
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to her wonderful caregiver Elizabeth Tuttle and to the caring staff at the Jesse Helms Nursing Center who all loved her gentle ways.
A celebration of life service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 30 in the chapel of Central United Methodist Church followed by visitation in the Central Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Good Samaritan Fund of Central United Methodist Church or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
