CHARLOTTE – The Community Blood Center of the Carolinas is teaming up with Waxhaw residents John and Maria Asher to host a blood drive in honor of their son, Joseph Asher. The public blood drive will take place on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Lighthouse Family Church, 2028 Wesley Chapel Road in Indian Trail. Those who wish to participate can sign up online at www.cbcc.us/donate (sponsor code: Asher) or call 704-972-4712 to schedule an appointment.

Another community blood drive will be held in Joseph Asher’s honor on Oct. 12 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Archadeck of Charlotte, 2311 Village Lake Drive. Donors unable to make it to either blood drive may go into one of CBCC’s center locations during that week to make a donation in Asher’s name. Visit www.cbcc.us for center location hours.

“We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of support we’ve received; by the care and treatment our son is getting at Joseph M. Still Burn Center,” John Asher said in a press release from CBCC. “We want to do anything possible to help the patients at the burn center so we look forward to hosting this drive with the Community Blood Center of the Carolinas.”

Plasma collected at both blood drives and given in his honor at the center locations will be donated to Shepeard Community Blood Center in support of Joseph Asher and other burn center patients currently undergoing treatment at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center. Asher, 39, who resides in Greenville, S.C., was severely burned over 80 percent of his body after an apparent accident at a power station.
