Wingate women's soccer hosts Mars Hill Saturday night at 7 p.m.
Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University women’s soccer team hosts the Lions of Mars Hill College Saturday night at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs are 8-1-3 overall and 1-1-1 in the South Atlantic Conference. The Lions enter the match 1-11 overall and 0-4 in the SAC.
Wingate responded from its first loss of the year at Catawba Saturday night in a big way, picking up a 5-1 conference victory over Brevard Wednesday evening. Junior forward Kerstin Williams (Summerville, S.C.) netted a pair of goals to lead Wingate’s attack. Sophomore midfielder Casey King (Danvers, Mass.) added a goal and an assist for the Bulldogs. Juniors Samantha Baldwin (Stallings, N.C.) and Julie Zielinski (Erie, Pa.) chipped in with one goal each.
After tying their opening conference match of the season against Newberry 0-0, the Bulldogs defeated St. Andrews Presbyterian 6-0. Sophomore forward Liz Kinney (Moore, S.C.) led the way with two goals and an assist. Sophomore forward Kelly Adams (Matthews, N.C.) added a goal and two assists for the Bulldogs. Williams also notched a goal, along with seniors Madi Welch (Monroe, N.C.) and Jordan Mayer (Williamsburg, Va.).
Williams leads the Bulldogs with nine goals and 18 points on the season. Kinney is second on the team with seven goals and 17 points. Adams leads the Bulldogs and the SAC with seven assists, while ranking third on the team with 15 points. Williams, Kinney and Adams are in the top 10 in the conference in points.
Wingate has outscored its opponents 36-6 on the season, while outshooting the opposition 196-66. The Bulldogs lead the SAC in shutouts, while ranking second in goals, assists, points and goals allowed.
Mars Hill’s most recent game was a 3-2 loss to Tusculum Wednesday night. Junior forward Abby Martin (Greer, S.C.) and senior defender Austen Ward (Weaverville, N.C.) scored the goals for the Lions. Martin leads Mars Hill with four goals, three assists and seven points on the season.
The Bulldogs host Chowan Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. The Chowan contest will conclude a stretch where eight of nine matches were contested at Wingate’s home pitch. Wingate is currently 4-0-2 in the home stand.
