WMS students hear

about Patriot’s Pen

WEDDINGTON — In an effort to inspire Weddington Middle School students and to encourage sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students to participate in the VFW’s national essay contest, Steve Sherron of the Monroe Scoop addressed the students of Susan Williams’ eighth-grade social studies classes in early October. Sherron talked about his military experiences in the Navy. Students asked questions about his military commitment and related that to the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen essay topic for 2009-2010, which is “When Is The Right Time To Honor Our Military Heroes?”

The contest is open to all middle school students in Union County Public Schools. Locally, VFW Post 2423 sponsors the contest and will offer a first place prize of $200. Entry deadline is Nov. 1. Additional information is available from Donn Kegel at donn2405@aol.com.

Privitera named

to UA board

CHARLOTTE — David Privitera, executive vice president and COO of Concorde Construction Company, has been appointed by Union Academy to serve on its board of directors. He was one of nine candidates interviewed and is one of 10 members on the board. Privitera is a managing partner at Concorde Construction and has three children who attend Union Academy.

In a press release, Don Dixon, chairman of Union Academy board of directors said, “David came highly recommended to our selection committee and board as someone who was passionate about education and one that would be actively engaged in Union Academy’s mission of challenging academics, community service and a character-based instructional model.

“We were also impressed by David’s track record of success in business with closing and completing large construction projects,” Dixon said. “This illustrates the kind of experience; due diligence and attention to detail we need at the board level. We wanted someone that was a knowledgeable business professional — one that would be a role model in our community and one that would represent the character and commitment for which Union Academy is widely respected for. David met all of these qualifications and then some.”
