Deaths October 17
MONROE — Everette Baucom, 77, died Thursday (Oct. 15, 2009) at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Euto Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery.
Born Oct. 14, 1932, in Union County, he was a son of the late Luther Jerome and Dezzie Brewer Baucom.
Survivors include one granddaughter.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. today at the church.

Florence Griffin
INDIAN TRAIL — Mrs. Sarah Florence Simpson Griffin, age 91, of Indian Trail, passed away on Wednesday evening (Oct. 14, 2009) at CMC-Union.
A service to celebrate her life will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday (October 17, 2009) at Ebenezer Baptist Church, officiated by Reverend Leon Whitley and Reverend Tim Rogers.
Interment will follow at the Price Cemetery in Indian Trail.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Saturday (October 17, 2009) prior to the funeral service in the church fellowship hall.
Mrs. Griffin was born on August 10, 1918, in Union County, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Reece Johnson Simpson and Sarah Frances Rowell Simpson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Wilson Griffin in 2005.
In her earlier years, Mrs. Griffin worked as a textile weaver for Cannon Mills- Kannapolis. Later in her career, she and her late husband, Wilson Griffin, worked as houseparents at Boys Home in Huntersville.
Survivors include two sons, Darwin “Dee” Helms and wife, Shirl Helms of Salisbury, and Doug Griffin and wife Pam Griffin of Goldsboro; and two daughters, Sarah Lynne Johnson and husband Danny Johnson of Chesterfield, S.C., and Debbie Griffin of the home: two sisters, Blanche Honeycutt of Monroe and Bernice Eudy of Indian Trail.
There are 6 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter.

Olin Guy Helms
MONROE — Mr. Olin Guy Helms, age 87, of Monroe, passed away on Wednesday (October 14, 2009) at Carolinas Medical Center–Union.
A funeral service to celebrate the life of Mr. Helms will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday (October 19, 2009) at Gethsemane Memorial Garden in Charlotte, officiated by Reverend Frank Crump.
Mr. Helms was born in Union County, on July 20, 1922, a son of the late Robert Jackson Helms Sr. and Bertha Plyler Helms. He was a retired bakery mechanic. He was also a United States Army veteran, having served in World War II.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Hester Mitchem Helms in 1994; five brothers, Bill Helms, Hazel Helms, R.J. Helms Jr., Jerome Helms, Paul Helms; and one sister, Rachel McManus.
Survivors include two sons, Jerry Helms of Monroe, Gary Helms and wife, Diane, of Weddington; one sister, June Helms Williams and husband, Morris, of Columbia, South Carolina. There are four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

MONROE — Mr. Kenneth Bruce Mason, 48, died Thursday, October 15, 2009, at Presbyterian Hospital in Matthews.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 18, 2009, at Central United Methodist Church in Monroe. The family will receive friends following the service. Graveside services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 19, 2009, at the 1st Wesleyan Church Cemetery in Troy, N.C.
Mr. Mason was born February 22, 1961, in Troy, N.C., and was the son of the late Bruce E. Mason and Betty Sue Mason of Aberdeen, N.C. He was a maintenance supervisor with Stafford Cutting Dies in Indian Trail with 18 years of service.
In addition to his mother, Mr. Mason is survived by his wife, Alice Drake Mason; sons, Tyler Mason, of the home, Phillip Mason of Ft. Mill, S.C., and Matthew Difulio of Clemson, S.C.; daughter, Amanda Difulio of Ft. Mill, S.C.; sisters, Phyllis Brown of Troy, N.C., and Kim Mason Jolly of Pinehurst, N.C.; and grandmother, Mrs. Eva Mason of Troy, N.C.

Born April 3, 1933, in Kershaw County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Andrew and Mary Vance Miller.
Survivors include her husband, Charles Miller Sr. of Marshville; four sons, Charles Miller Jr. of Marshville, Alan Miller of Wingate, Eddie Miller of Mount Croghan, S.C., Roy Miller of Charlotte; one daughter, Mary Chambers of Wingate; 12 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. today at Mount Calvary AME Zion Church in Monroe.

Ada Rankin
CONCORD — Ada Gillis Rankin, 87, died Sunday (Oct. 11, 2009) at Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast.
Memorial service was private.
Born Oct. 25, 1921, in Charlotte, she was a daughter of the late Stephen Rankin and the late Nellie Frances Gillis.
Survivors include two sons, Christopher Sean Rankin of Concord, Charles Henry Rankin of Charlotte; one daughter, Frances Rankin Clanton of Fayetteville; two brothers, Bennie Blakely of Monroe, Stephen Gillis of New York; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

MONROE — Margo McCoy Williams, 34, died Thursday (Oct. 15, 2009) at Carolinas Medical Center-Union.
