Mavericks sweep conference meet
The Mavericks won the boys meet with a score of 20 points, followed by Weddington with 37. The girls race was much closer, with Marvin Ridge edging the Warriors 26-32.
The Mavericks also took the individual championships as junior Chris Colo ran away with the boys race and Brittany Fritz pulled out somewhat of an upset in the girls event.
“My goals were to win the county, conference, then regionals, and place top three in states,” Colo said. “I accomplished this goal and it’s motivating me to do better. I feel good, I wanted to PR (personal record) today with a time of 15:50, but I didn’t do that but I still think I did pretty good today.”
Colo ran the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes and six seconds, nearly a minute ahead of teammate Michael Colven (17:01), who placed second overall.
“Our regionals race is at McAlpine Creek in Charlotte, and it’s a really flat course,” Colo said. “I feel like it’ll be my fastest race of the season and I expect to go significantly below 16 minutes and place first.”
Fritz, just a sophomore, outlasted Weddington’s Haley Kapheim.
“I’m very excited and pleased with my results,” Fritz said. “I did not expect to win it, I was just trying to split Chelsea Matson and Kapheim and I ended up doing better than that and I’m just really happy with it.”
“Right now I’m feeling pretty confident,” said Fritz of her chances at regionals, “I just want to keep improving and get a PR. I’ve been working really hard in workouts. I’m trying to go to the next level.”
Marvin Ridge’s Cameron Starr was voted coach of the year for both the boys and the girls.
“I think we ran extremely well ...” Starr said. “We put a lot of effort into talking about how to run the course and how we matched up against the competition and they executed perfectly. I think, for regionals, on the girls side it is going to be a three-team race between Weddington, us and Charlotte Catholic and on the boys side Weddington is tough and so is Catholic so it’s going to be a lot of those teams up front and it’ll be a numbers game at that point.”
The top 12 individuals in each event took home all-conference honors.
The Midwest 3A and West 4A regional meets will be held Oct. 31 with Weddington being the host for 3A and Sun Valley hosting the 4A meet.
