#6 Duke runs past Wingate Bulldogs in exhibition Thursday night

Durham, N.C.----The Duke University women’s basketball team defeated the Wingate University Bulldogs 99-31 in an exhibition game Thursday night at historic Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke is the number six team in the preseason AP Top 25 poll.

The Blue Devils jumped out to a 52-18 lead in the first half, while shooting 49.4 percent from the field in the game. Duke also connected on seven-of-19 shots from beyond the arc. Six players hit double figures for the Blue Devils, led by Jasmine Thomas with 17 points, seven steals and five assists. Allison Vernerey added 16 points on eight-of-10 shooting.

Sophomore guard Kurie Washington (Marion, N.C.) led the Wingate attack with 11 points. Senior guard Sarah Rosser (Raleigh, N.C.) added six points for the Bulldogs, who were held to 24 percent shooting from the field.

Duke racked up 26 steals on the night, while forcing 41 Wingate turnovers. The Bulldogs connected on three-of-11 shots from three-point territory, led by Rosser, who was two-for-three from downtown. Senior center Stacie Rhodes (Raleigh, N.C.) pulled down a team-high five rebounds for Wingate, to go along with two blocks.

Wingate will take on another Division I opponent Sunday, traveling to Davidson College for a 2 p.m. start. The Bulldogs open regular season play Sunday, November 15, when they travel to Queens (N.C.) for a 2 p.m. start. Wingate’s first home game is December 4, hosting SAC foe Newberry College at 6 p.m.
