Two Bulldogs earn all-tourney honors at SAC event
Rock Hill, S.C.----Two Wingate University men’s soccer student-athletes were named to the All-Tournament team at the 2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer tournament, league officials announced Sunday night.
Wingate junior midfielder Luke Mulholland (Preston, England) and freshman defender Corey McCollom (Monroe, N.C.) represent the Bulldogs on the honor squad. Tusculum senior forward Anteneh Lemma was named the event’s MVP as he helped the Pioneers win the title.
Mulholland scored two goals (including the match-winner) in Wingate’s 3-1 quarterfinal victory over Newberry last Tuesday. The SAC Player of the Year, Mulholland earned third team All-American honors in 2008. Thirteen of his 15 goals this season came against SAC opponents.
McCollum is a stabilizing force for the Bulldog defense. He has played every minute of every match this season. Wingate has allowed only 24 goals in 17 matches this year.
The Bulldogs are 12-4-1 overall. Wingate awaits word of a possible NCAA Division II tournament berth. The NCAA championships committee will announce the 2009 tournament field Monday night (Nov. 9) at 7 p.m.
