The students and staff at Shiloh Elementary School celebrated book characters again this year by participating in the school’s second annual character celebration walk.

After reading and studying about various characters in literature, classes paraded around the track on Oct. 30, in order to display their newly found knowledge and love for their character.

“We really enjoyed seeing the connections that our students made with their book characters,” Shiloh principal Michael Henderson said. “Their interpretations of book characters, creatively displayed for all to see during our parade, were priceless.”

The school librarian, Pam Cook, dressed as Sally Jean from the book, “Sally Jean, the Bicycle Queen.” As part of her costume, Cook brought in a replica of Flash, the bicycle in the book.

As an incentive for the students to get in some extra reading, Cook will raffle off the bike sometime before Thanksgiving. In order to “show off the prize” and increase motivation, she rode the bike around the track dressed as Sally Jean.

In order to win, students receive a raffle ticket for every 25 pages they read. As students earn their tickets, they place them in a basket in the media center. The drawing will be held before the Thanksgiving break.
