MARSHVILLE — The Marshville Town Council might disband a subcommittee only a week after creating it.

Last Monday, the Town Council charged a committee to whittle down resumes for the town administrator position from about a dozen to only two or three. Councilwoman Gail Kiker, who will cycle off the board Dec. 7, called for a special meeting this coming Monday and plans to recommend that all council members be present for all interviews.

“I had several citizens call me about it and say that they would like the whole board involved,” she said.

If it happens, it would be the fourth time in a month the council has changed a decision.

The Town Council decided to re-hire police officer Stuart Chaffin days after upholding his firing. It then decided to suspend two other officers, Lt. Matt Tarlton and officer Darryl Gerald, for a month. It then reinstated them after 10 days without back pay; days later the council changed its mind and awarded pay for the time the officers were suspended.

The officers were initially suspended for a photo that displayed what council members deemed objectionable behavior.

Mayor Frank Deese cautioned the council to not go back on so many decisions, saying it is more prudent to think through a decision once, then stand by it.

Kiker voted in favor of establishing the committee and defended herself.

“You have a right to go back and think about things,” she said.

The agenda also has an item to “discuss ... the duties of Officer Stuart Chaffin.” Kiker said that another council member asked to have that item on the agenda but would not say who.

She refused comment on Chaffin or what will be discussed Monday regarding him.

The meeting will be 6:30 Monday at Town Hall, 201 W. Main St.
