Parks Byrd

WINSTON-SALEM — Mr. Parks William Byrd, 91 of Winston-Salem passed away Monday, November 23, 2009. He was born July 1, 1918, in Swain County to Samuel and Emma Byrd. Surviving is a daughter, Sandra Peet and husband, Van of Monroe, N.C. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday at Swain County Memorial Park in Bryson City, N.C.

MARSHVILLE — Madge Curtis Eubanks, 90, died Tuesday (Nov. 24, 2009) at Autumn Care Nursing Care.

Arrangements will be announced by McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe.

James Huntley

WINGATE — James Edward Huntley, 44, died Nov. 17, 2009, at Chesterfield General Hospital in Cheraw, S.C.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Word God Only Ministry.

Born Nov. 30, 1964, in Union County, he was a son of Frank Broadie of Concord and the late Rebecca Huntley.

Survivors, in addition to his father, include one daughter, NaTasha Huntley of Greensboro; four brothers, Clifford Broadie, Richard Huntley, both of Monroe, Brian Broadie, Rock Rosemond, both of Concord; two sisters, Crystal Nicole Broadie and Sophia Cooper, both of Concord.

Grier Funeral Home of Monroe is in charge.

Don Nash

MARSHVILLE — Don A. Nash, 74, died Tuesday (Nov. 24, 2009) at home.

Funeral will be 6 p.m. Friday at Morgan & Son Funeral Home.

Born Jan. 9, 1935, in Union County, he was a son of the late Boyce B. and Della Johnson Nash. He was preceded in death by two sons, Chris Nash and David Nash, and a stepdaughter, Penny Prince.

Survivors include his wife, Nan Nash of Marshville; one son, Danny Nash of Wadesboro; two stepsons, Mike Riley of Matthews, Robert Riley of Marshville; two daughters, Nancy Cox of Marshville, Lucy Nash of Hamlet; one stepdaughter, Debbie Lynn of Charlotte.

Oscar Lee Starnes

MATTHEWS — Mr. Starnes, 92, of Matthews passed away Sunday, November 22, 2009, at CMC-University. Graveside services will be conducted at 12 noon Wednesday at Indian Trail Cemetery. His family will receive friends for the hour prior to the service at Heritage Funeral Home, 4431 Old Monroe Rd.

Mr. Starnes was born August 19, 1917, in Union County to the late Wade H. and Blanch Long Starnes. He served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He retired after many years of service with Seven-Eleven Corp. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Willie Flowe Starnes, and by his siblings, Wade H. Starnes Jr., Woodrow Starnes, Grier Starnes, Jane Freeman, Luther Starnes and Johnnie Mae Starnes.

His survivors include his sisters, Mabel Funderburk of Indian Trail and Wattsie Tynner of Florida; one brother, Tom Starnes of Indian Trail; niece, Janet Graham and husband Al of Stallings; great-nieces, Stephanie and Courtney Ross; and by numerous other nieces and nephews.

The family would like to offer their deep appreciation to Hunter Woods Nursing and to CMC-University Staff and to Dr. Kirv Mendez, and to Hospice at Charlotte for their kind and loving care and support. They also ask that memorials may be sent to Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 1420 E. 7th Street, Charlotte NC 28204.

Arrangements for the Starnes family are in the care of Heritage Funeral Home.

Jay Tomberlin

MONROE — Jay Warren Tomberlin, age 64, of 5708 Unionville Road, Monroe, N.C., passed away on November 23, 2009, at CMC‑Main‑Charlotte in Charlotte.

Born in Monroe, N.C., on December 28, 1944, he was a son of the late Wriston Lee Tomberlin and the late Flora Mae Rushing Tomberlin. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Bobby Tomberlin.

He was an expeditor for Pennsylvania House for 40 years.

Surviving are son, Marty W. Tomberlin of Indian Trail; daughter, Amy Purser and husband Byron of Monroe; two grandchildren, Nathan Torres and Alexandria Purser; three brothers, James Tomberlin of Mint Hill, Buster Tomberlin of Midland and Wilburn Tomberlin of Monroe; sisters; Flora Little, Deane Simpson, Peggy Hinson, Doris Greene, Faynelle Greene and Kay Kiker all of Monroe. He is also survived by a very special friend, Wanda Foxx of Indian Trail. ‎

A visitation will be held on Friday, November 27, 2009, from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at Hartsell Funeral Home, Midland.

Funeral service will held on Saturday, November 28, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at Hope Second Advent Christian Church with Rev. Brent Carpenter and Rev. Billy Mobley officiating.

Burial will follow at Shiloh Advent Christian Church Cemetery in Monroe.
