PR girls improve to 2-1

INDIAN TRAIL — The Porter Ridge High girls basketball team built a 17-point lead in the fourth quarter and held on for a 42-35 home win over Independence on Monday.

The Pirates led by 11 after three quarters, then opened the fourth with a 6-0 run.

The Pirates (2-1) used defensive pressure to ear the victory, finishing with 26 steals as a team.

Junior forward Kelley Godbout had a game-high six steals for the Pirates. She also scored 14 points, sharing game-high honors with Independence’s Kourtney Hailey.

Independence opened the second half with a 9-2 run to cut into the Pirates’ 11-point halftime lead, but Ashlei Boone ended it with a field goal with 3:50 left in the period and the Pirates finished the quarter with a 7-0 run — capped by a Haley Secrest 3-pointer to end the third quarter.

The Pirates also owned a substantial advantage on the boards (40-30), with Kara Hastings securing nine of those rebounds.

Cayleigh Weekley and Godbout led the Pirates with four assists each while Secret had the only two 3-pointers for the Pirates.

Hastings added four blocks for Porter Ridge.

Patriots whip PR boys

Independence cruised to victory in the boys game, whipping the Patriots 72-44.

The Pirates only made 13 field goals, including five 3-pointers.

Senior guard Tanner Fort made three of the Pirates’ 3-pointers.

Independence (1-3) dominated the Pirates (1-2) on the glass, grabbing 38 rebounds to PR’s 15.

Dquan Simpson came off the bench to lead the Patriots in scoring with a game-high 16 points — including two of his teams four three-pointers.

Porter Ridge plays at home against Hickory Ridge on Friday.
