MONROE — Action Garbage owner Edgar Nelson O’Neal, 72, has been identified as the man whose body was found after a fire at his business.

The Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed O’Neal’s identity on Friday, according to a press release from the Union County Sheriff’s Office. He had been missing since the early-morning fire on Wednesday.

O’Neal, a Waxhaw resident, owned the trash collection service for 42 years and served as the primary contractor for Indian Trail’s waste services.

A joint investigation by the Union County Fire Marshal’s Office, the State Bureau of Investigation and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms determined that the fire originated near O’Neal’s body, but the cause of the fire is undetermined. Investigators from both the Sheriff’s and Fire Marshal’s offices said there was no indication of foul play.

The family plans a memorial service for 6 p.m. today at First Baptist Church of Indian Trail. He is survived by his wife and six children.
