Fourth suspect takes plea deal in double murder
Rufino Santamaria, 19, formerly of 3515 Old Camden Road in Monroe, pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder. He was charged in the Dec. 1, 2007, double homicide of Maria Elvira Celedon and her boyfriend, Carlos Armando Arteaga DelAngel, who were killed in their home at 5703 Secrest Short Cut Road.
Ivan Martinez, 19, formerly of 3452 Walkup Ave. in Monroe, pleaded guilty to the same counts Monday.
Five people were charged with murder in the double homicide; only Mario Salas Organistas, 26, of 304 Kerr St. in Monroe, has not pleaded. His next court date is Dec. 14.
Police found $47,000 in cash and $80,000 in cocaine at the house where the murder happened. Autopsies showed that DelAngel was shot six times and Celedon was shot nine times.
District Attorney John Snyder said the plea deals were offered because the younger men were not in the room where the actual murders took place.
According to court files, when police arrived at the scene they found DelAngel’s sister, Maricela Arteaga DelAngel, who was with her 6-year-old nephew and 4-year-old niece. Maricela DelAngel told police she hid with the children in the bedroom as their parents were killed.
Snyder said the younger men were watching the sister and children and were not a part in the actual murders. Monday, Ivan Martinez’s attorney, Wayne Covington, said Martinez did not know a murder was going to happen and thought the men went to the house only for a robbery.
Union County Sheriff’s Office Detective Brian Helms said the men who entered the house each had “assault-type rifles.”
