MONROE — Former Monroe High football standout Jameze Massey recently reached elite status after his standout sophomore season at Louisburg Junior College.

Massey, a 5-foot-8, 170-pounder, was named second team all-American as a return specialist by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) after scoring three touchdowns on kickoff returns and one on a punt return this season.

Massey set school records for most kick return yards (539), most kickoff returns for touchdowns (3), longest kickoff return (79 yards) and most return yards in one game (226).

Massey, who has been clocked in the 40-yard dash at 4.3 seconds, also accounted for the first punt return for a touchdown in school history on a 62-yarder against Central Carolina Sports Academy.

Massey averaged 33.6 yards on KO returns and 22.3 on punt returns.

“I feel like I’ve gotten a little faster since high school,” said Massey. “To be honest, I was a little surprised to be an all-American.”

Massey also added 743 yards and six touchdowns as a starting receiver for Louisburg.

Massey said he’s been in contact with a few colleges, but he’s yet to be offered a scholarship.

“I’m undecided on what I want to do right now,” said Massey. “I’m probably going to go back to Louisburg and wait it out and see what happens from there.”

As a two-year varsity player at Monroe, Massey was named Union County’s Most Valuable Player by The Enquirer-Journal as a senior in 2007. He scored 23 total touchdowns and finished with 1,350 rushing yards. Massey made first-team all-state as a returner — for all classifications — as a senior.

Massey, who averaged 9.6 yards per carry, also caught 22 passes for 539 yards.

As a junior in 2006, Massey was named second-team all-Union County.
