MONROE — Last time the Porter Ridge High girls basketball team faced Monroe High, the Pirates ran away with an easy 49-25 victory on their home court.

But the matchup was much tighter in their second meeting of the season on Wednesday, as Porter Ridge held on for a 60-55 road win over the Redhawks.

With the score tied at the half, the Pirates (10-2) outscored Monroe 12-6 in the third quarter to take control. Monroe (6-6) did cut the lead down to one on a 3-pointer by Dequisha McCain early in the fourth, but the Redhawks could never take the lead.

Senior guard Raven Falls and junior forward Kelley Godbout did most of the damage offensively for Porter Ridge.

Falls finished with 20 points while Godbout ended with 19 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. The duo combined for 26 of Porter Ridge’s 33 first-half points.

Senior forward Kara Hastings added nine rebounds and five points off the bench for the Pirates.

Monroe, which entered Wednesday’s contest on a five-game winning streak, got a game-high 25 points from McCain.

A junior guard, McCain also had seven rebounds and four steals.

Shakira Jordan added 11 points for Monroe, while Katie Bention and Lydia Griffin each scored seven.

Monroe travels to Central Academy on Friday. Porter Ridge plays at home against Marvin Ridge in its Southern Carolina Conference opener.
