INDIAN TRAIL — Already holding a 15-point advantage at halftime, the Marvin Ridge High boys basketball team exploded for 26 points in the third quarter on its way to an easy 75-50 road win over Porter Ridge on Friday.

Leading 37-22 at the break, Marvin Ridge’s starters outscored the Pirates 16-6 in the first four minutes of the third to break the game open.

Junior guard TJ Tolbert scored nine of his game-high 20 points during the run. The Mavericks (4-5, 1-0 Southern Carolina Conference) went on to outscore the Pirates (3-9, 0-1 SCC) 26-11 in the frame.

“We played really well in those first three or four minutes in the second half,” said Marvin Ridge coach Gosnell White. “I thought our pressure defense was the key. We forced some turnovers and got some easy baskets on the other end.”

Ten different players got in the scoring column for Marvin Ridge, including junior center Patrick Bellucci, who contributed 10 points and eight rebounds off the bench.

Senior guard Jon Bassett also scored 10 for the Mavericks, while teammate Colby Rhodes added eight points, six assists and three steals.

Senior guard PJ Freeman scored a team-high 13 points off the bench for Porter Ridge, which also got eight points from senior guard Tanner Fort.

The Pirates are at Parkwood on Tuesday.

Marvin Ridge, which was playing for the first time in 10 days, takes on Sun Valley at home on Tuesday.

“The guys were anxious to get out there,” said White. “We had lost a couple in a row, so we needed this one.”

Godbout leads PR girls

Junior forward Kelley Godbout scored 16 points and hit a key 3-pointer late in the game to help Porter Ridge’s girls hold off Marvin Ridge, 48-42.

With the Pirates (11-2, 1-0 SCC) clinging to a four-point lead with just over three minutes remaining in the fourth, Godbout knocked down her third triple of the game from the right wing. The three was Porter Ridge’s first basket of the fourth quarter.

Senior guard Raven Falls then converted a layup on Porter Ridge’s next possession for a nine-point lead, and the Mavericks (5-5, 0-1) never got closer than five the rest of the way.

Senior guard Chelsey Horan had 16 points to lead Marvin Ridge while teammate Jordan Henry posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Henry, a 6-foot-2 sophomore center, also had a game-high four blocks.

Senior forward Kara Hastings added 10 rebounds and seven points for the Pirates, who also got a game-high 13 rebounds from freshman post Jada Huntley.
