Mrs. Marion Davison of Waxhaw, died Monday, Feb. 1, 2010.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Heritage Funeral Home, Weddington.

Mass will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Matthew, with burial to follow at Forest Lawn East.

Fairley G. Funderburk

Monroe

Mr. Fairley G. Funderburk, 98, of Monroe passed away peacefully on February 1, 2010 at home with his loving family by his side. Visitation for family and friends will be held tonight from 6:30 until 9:00PM at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. Funeral services in celebration of his life will be held 2:00PM, Thursday, February 4, 2010 at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church with Reverend Shad Hicks and Reverend John Culbreth officiating. Interment will follow the service at Lakeland Memorial Park where he will be laid to rest beside his beloved late wife of 65 years, Ida Starnes Funderburk.

Mr. Funderburk was born on April 7, 1911 in Union County, son of the late Isaac T. Funderburk and Carrie Melton Funderburk. In addition to his late wife Ida, and his parents, Fairley was also preceded in death by two children, Melva Lee Funderburk and Javis Funderburk, 8 brothers and 1 granddaughter. Mr. Funderburk was a family man who devoted his life to providing for his family, from working at The Bleachery, working on his farm raising cattle and hogs to provide income, food and milk, cutting hair at his home and even digging wells. He was a longtime dedicated member and deacon at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church and was also a founding member of Stack Road Fire Department. When not working, Fairley enjoyed spending time hunting, fishing and piddling with anything he could find.

Survivors include his loving children, Glenson Funderburk and wife Frances of Monroe, Joan Witmore of Matthews, Gearlene Griffin of Fort Mill, Theodore “Ted” Funderburk and wife Pat of Monroe, Judy King of Monroe and Calvin Funderburk and wife Renee of Monroe; 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Hannah Lou Adams of Chesterfield, SC.

The family would like to extend special heartfelt thanks to Trina Hartis for the love, care and compassion given to Mr. Funderburk and his family during his declining health. Also the family would like to thank Hospice and Total Care of the care and support given to the entire family.

Joyce Tucker Griffin, 79, passed away Saturday, January 30, 2010. She was born in Greensboro, NC on January 12, 1931 daughter of the late Dwight Nicholas and Alma Rorie Tucker. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at 2:00 PM in the Gordon Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Lakeland Memorial Park. Mrs. Griffin is survived by her husband, Charles A. Griffin, sons, Brian K. Griffin and wife, Regina and C. Mitchell Griffin and wife, Rhonda; sister, Linda T. Rummage all of Monroe, grandchildren, Bradley Griffin and Lauren Griffin, adopted grandchildren, Ginger Coker and Josh Self. Mrs. Bernice Massey Higgins, 92, died Monday, (Jan. 25, 2010) at CMC-Union, Monroe.

She was born July 28, 1917 in Union County, daughter of the late James Nelson Massey and Easter Lilly Harris Massey.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010 at Steele Hill AMEZ Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. at the church.

Mrs. Higgins is survived by two sons, John L. Cureton of Lancaster, SC, and Samuel Crowe of Waxhaw; a step-daughter, Mrs. Flossie Mae Williams of Heath Springs, SC.

The family will be at the home of John Cureton, 6946 Cureton-Taylor Drive, Lancaster, SC.

Jean Alexander Marrocco

Jean Alexander Marrocco, 77 of Waxhaw, passed away Friday, January 29, 2010.

A memorial service will be held Friday, February 5, 2010 at 11:00 AM in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Monroe. Following the service, the family will receive friends at the luncheon reception in the adjacent Parish Hall.

Jean Marrocco was born in Waxhaw, NC on May 15, 1932, daughter of the late Ed Hand and Mary Carter Alexander. She graduated from Waxhaw High School in 1950 and attended George Washington College in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Marrocco worked for the Naval Department in Washington, D.C. and the United States Air Force in Langley, Virginia. She retired as an administrative assistant from the Hoechst-Celanese Corporation in Charlotte after nearly 30 years of service. She was an active member of the Waxhaw community. She was a former president of the Waxhaw Women’s Club and a longtime member of the Waxhaw ABC Board.

Mrs. Marrocco was strong, resourceful and gentle. She had a contagious smile and a great sense of humor. She adored her grandchildren. Traveling was her passion and she enjoyed sharing adventures with her family and friends. She was generous with her time and quick to help those in need. She will be greatly missed.

Mr. Marrocco is survived by her sons, Edward Marrocco and wife Kim of Indian Trail, NC; Vincent Marrocco and wife Tracy of Philadephia, PA; daughters Maria Brown and husband Clayton of Portland, OR and Christine Stager and husband Steve of Raleigh, NC; eleven grandchildren: Adam, Caleb, Max, Josephine, Peter, Gabriella, Wynne, Mary, Amanda, Sarah and Benjamin.

Mrs. Artha Kate Thomas Moore, 88 passed away Monday, February 1, 2010, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Gayle and David Griffin, where she has made her home for the past two years.

A celebration of her life will be held on Thursday, February 4th at 3pm at Hamilton Crossroads Baptist Church, where she was a lifelong member. Burial will be in Marshville City Cemetery.

The family of Mrs. Moore will receive friends Wednesday evening February 3rd, 2010 from 6:30-8:30pm at Morgan & Son Funeral Home in Marshville.

Born on June 11, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Melton Ellis and Lille Fairle Helms Thomas.

She was preceded in death in 1999 by her husband of nearly 62 years, J. Fred Moore. Also by brothers L.V., Woodrow, Alfred, and Pearson Thomas., and a sister Sarah T. Helms.

Mrs. Moore is survived by one son, Hayward (Woody) Moore and his wife Judy of Matthews, two daughters, Renee’ M. Wright and husband Jesse (Sonny) and Gayle M. Griffin and husband David, all of Marshville.

She was a loving Grandmother of five grandchildren, Kendall Moore and wife Julie of Waxhaw, Karla M. Russell and husband Bill, of Matthews, Tony Wright and wife, Shannon of Monroe, Shelley Wright and wife, Crystal and Reggy Jackson and wife, Tonya, all of Marshville.

Granny was also blessed with twelve great grandchildren, Casey, Haley, and Megan Moore, Jake and Sami Russell, Cam, MaKayla, and Kyla Wright, and Reagan, Mason, Bailey Grace, and Riley Jackson.

Mrs. Moore is also survived by one brother, Joe B. Thomas and wife Helen and one sister, M.E. Moore all of Marshville. A sister –in – law, Peggy P. Thomas of Mint Hill and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Artha was a hard worker, both at public work and as a homemaker. She enjoyed flower gardening in her spare time with iris and daffodils being her favorites. Her indoor hobby was crocheting afghans for family and friends. But most of all, she enjoyed her vegetable gardens. She loved freezing and canning for her family. She was very devoted and loving to her children and their families in everything she did.

The family would like to thank Tara Johnson for her constant dedication and love. Thank you to Nancy Wright for the time she spent taking care of Mom and also to Cam Wright , a great grandson. Their devotion to our Mother will never be forgotten. Also, a special thanks to Hospice of Union County for their love and care.

Mrs. Strawn was born in Chelsea County, MA. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and loved to travel overseas with her church group. She loved cooking, baking and spending time with her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walter Ray Strawn; brother, Frank Saladino; sisters, Grace Saladino, Liz Mastone; and Mary Sicarello.

She is survived her son, Raymond F. Strawn and wife, Dawn of Flowery Branch, GA; son, David A. Strawn and wife, Linda of Clermont, GA; brother, Carmelo Josephine (Bob) Durham, Stuart, FL; Hilda (Louis) Fuccillo, E.
