Deaths for Tuesday, March 9
Monroe
John George Smith, 87, of Monroe passed away Monday, March 8, 2009 at his residence in Monroe. Funeral services in celebration of his life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at Shiloh Baptist Church in Monroe with his pastor, the Reverend Don Whitener officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens. His family will receive friends beginning at 1 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. prior to the service.
John was born Feb. 24, 1923 in Stanly County to the late Edmond and Ila Eudy Smith. He was a machinist by trade. John had a wonderful sense of humor and could tell a story with the best of them. John and his late wife, Mary Deal Smith, were truly soul mates from the first day of the fifty six years they were married. One of joys of John’s life was the Shiloh “Joy Club” (Just Over Youth). In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the “Joy Club” in John’s name. He was a wonderful father and grandfather who will be missed by all. He leaves behind many cherished memories.
His survivors include two children: a daughter, Tina Pressley (Rick) of Mint Hill, and a son Tim Smith (Teresa) also of Mint Hill; grandchildren Corey and Dustin Pressley and Katie and Jesse Smith; sisters Ruby Melton (Garner), Doris Smith Preslar, and Virginia Mullis, all of Monroe, Vivian Price of Concord, and Lillian Thomas (Herb) of Ft. Mill, SC.

Linda Williams Lothery

Mrs. Linda “Alice” Williams Lothery, 66, died Sunday (March 7, 2010) at her home in Monroe.
Mrs. Lothery was born Sep. 26, 1943 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Mr. Oren Louis Williams, Jr. and the late Mrs. Merle Jeanette Estridge Williams, she was also preceded in death by her husband Mr. Wallace “Wally” Lothery on June 27, 2007.
Survivors include three sons, Robert Glasson of Yemassee, S.C., William Glasson of Tradesville, S.C. and James Glasson of Plymouth, Indiana; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Tuesday night (March 9, 2010) from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the McEwen Funeral Home in Monroe.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m.. Wednesday afternoon, March 10, at the Solid Rock Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Roger Nance and the Rev. Charles Miller, burial will follow in the Smyrna United Methodist Church Cemetery on Medlin Road, Monroe, North Carolina.
Memorials may be made to the Solid Rock Baptist Church Bldg. Fund, 1924 Old Pageland-Monroe Road, Monroe N.C. 28112.
McEwen Funeral and Cremation Service of Monroe is serving the family of Mrs. Lothery.
Minor Thomas Melton
Monroe
Mr. Minor Thomas Melton, 86, died Sunday, March 7, 2010 at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.
Mr. Melton was born July 3, 1923, in Union County, son of the late John David land Minnie Walden Melton. He was also preceded in death by seven siblings, and his son-in-law, Wade Aldridge.
Funeral services to celebrate the life of Mr. Melton will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, at Midway United Methodist Church, interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Mrs. Sallie Hunter Melton of the home; two daughters, Ann Melton Helms and husband David of Monroe, and Kathy Melton Aldridge, of Monroe; one son, Donald Ray Melton and wife Janet of Polkton; seven grandchildren, Terry and Tim Helms, Donald and Cindy Melton, Ricky, Todd, and Tommy Aldridge; and 13 great-grandchildren, Brandi and Dustin Manus, Gavin and Garrett Melton, Nicholas Helms, Casey, Morgan, Joseph, Keith, Shelby, Nathan, Emily, and Olivia Aldridge.

Mr. Richard Worth Carpenter, 54, died Sunday, March 7, 2010 at CMC-Union.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, visitation will be 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. in church fellowship building. Interment will be at Peachland City Cemetery.
Mr. Carpenter was born Sept. 3, 1955 in Union County, son of the late Worth Carpenter and Martha Johnson Carpenter.
Survivors include a sister, Rita Griffin of Marshville.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Shaw Griffin mission fund, c/o Austin Grove Baptist Church, 5919 Austin Grove Church Road, Marshville.
