It is a tragic irony that Union County has marked the first day of Domestic Violence Awareness month with a knife attack by a husband that was so brutal that his wife had to be airlifted to a hospital in Charlotte while her husband fled to Rock Hill, S.C.
A year ago, the County Commissioners made a whipping boy of the public school system, blaming its excesses for the financial woes of the county and accusing the administration of spending money like “drunken sailors.”
That was political rhetoric.
The Monroe City Council should adopt the proposed personnel ordinance that prohibits council members from attempting to influence hiring decisions and that toughens the city standards on nepotism. And the vote should be unanimous.
Financial planners will tell you that Rule No. 1 in managing your nest egg is to never spend the principal. Interest is a renewable resource, but if you crack the nest egg, there will be less and less to generate interest next year and the year after. It is good advice.
Too bad we have not been listening.

So here is the question that motorists and taxpayers in Union County need to ask themselves:
