It is a tragic irony that Union County has marked the first day of Domestic Violence Awareness month with a knife attack by a husband that was so brutal that his wife had to be airlifted to a hospital in Charlotte while her husband fled to Rock Hill, S.C.
A year ago, the County Commissioners made a whipping boy of the public school system, blaming its excesses for the financial woes of the county and accusing the administration of spending money like “drunken sailors.”
That was political rhetoric.

Last week while we were celebrating the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King's “I Have a Dream” speech, part of that dream came true.
The Monroe City Council should adopt the proposed personnel ordinance that prohibits council members from attempting to influence hiring decisions and that toughens the city standards on nepotism. And the vote should be unanimous.
Around this time of year, I always re-think some of the central assumptions of economics. This is because I have to explain them to new undergraduates, most of whom have no background in economics.
